A video belongs in a cold email when it shows a recipient-specific point that text cannot explain as efficiently. It does not belong merely because video feels more personal. Link to it, summarize it in the email, and let the recipient decide whether to watch.

Decide whether video earns its space

Use video for a visual workflow, a short product demonstration, or a tailored explanation of a public observation. Avoid a general founder introduction, a long feature tour, or a recording that makes the reader hunt for the relevant moment. If the point fits in one clear sentence, text is probably the lower-friction format.

Before recording, write the fallback summary. This reverses the common workflow: the email should be useful even when the recipient cannot play media, is on a slow connection, uses assistive technology, or simply does not want to watch. Add a transcript or meaningful description when it improves accessibility, and avoid implying that a play click is an engagement signal you can interpret with certainty.

Template structure

The template asset gives you a starting shape: verified observation, consequence, one video purpose, text summary, and a small question. Replace every placeholder with evidence you can stand behind. “I made this for you” is not personalization if the content could have been sent to anyone in the segment.

Use the cold email templates for non-video alternatives and compare the ask with the low-friction CTA examples. Keep the link descriptive, avoid a stack of tracking parameters or unrelated destinations, and do not claim that a video format guarantees better delivery or response.

Accessibility and fallback review

Check that the destination works without an account unless the account is genuinely required. Give the video a descriptive title, provide a text summary, and make the first frame informative rather than a blank loading state. The email should state what the viewer will learn and how long the clip is only if that estimate is accurate. If the recipient declines, treat that as a valid answer; do not continue using the media as a reason to press.

Use the complete cold-email guide to place a video decision inside the broader workflow of targeting, personalization, and follow-up.

Subject: A 60-second look at {{specific_workflow}}

Hi {{first_name}},

I noticed {{verifiable_observation}}. That can make {{specific_task}} harder when {{relevant_constraint}}.

I recorded a short walkthrough showing {{one_specific_point}}: {{video_link}}
If you would rather not watch it, the short version is: {{one-sentence-summary}}.

Would it be useful to compare notes on {{small_next_step}}? If not relevant, no problem.

Best,

Checklist

    Common mistakes to avoid

    • Sending a generic video with the recipient's name added but no relevant observation.
    • Making the thumbnail or play button the only explanation of the offer.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does video work in a cold email?

    It can fit when the video demonstrates something specific to the recipient and the surrounding email is useful on its own. The format is not a guarantee of attention, replies, or inbox placement.

    Should I embed a video in a cold email?

    A linked landing page is usually easier to control than an embedded player. Whatever format you choose, include descriptive text, a transcript or summary where practical, and a fallback for readers who cannot play media.

    How long should a cold-email video be?

    Keep it only as long as needed to show the relevant point. A short demonstration is easier to evaluate than a broad company overview, but there is no universal duration that fits every audience.
